Blanche Olympia Vap

Blanche Olympia Vap, 97, of rural Atwood, died Thursday, July 16, 2026. She was born on February 3, 1929, in San Salvador, El Salvador, to Joseph and Maria (Trejo) Quiros.

Blanche's mother passed away shortly after her birth, and she was lovingly raised by her father alongside her eight brothers and sisters in El Salvador. Her older sisters stepped into motherly roles, surrounding her with love, guidance, and strength while helping care for her as she grew up. Blanche carried those values with her throughout her life. Those values became the foundation of the wife, mother, grandmother, and matriarch she would one day become. She also remained deeply proud of her Salvadoran heritage.

As a young woman, Blanche left El Salvador with members of her family and made San Francisco, California, her home. There she met a young Kansas sailor, Daniel S. Vap, on a blind date—one she was initially hesitant to accept but ultimately agreed to at the last minute. They were married in San Francisco and later moved to Nebraska before settling on the Vap homestead in the country north of Atwood, Kansas.

Blanche loved country life and enjoyed watching things grow. She helped Daniel build their farming and Brangus cattle ranch operation, raising their family along the way and later working alongside their oldest son as well. She was an excellent cook and homemaker who always had a meal ready for family and the hired hands. Blanche was a strong woman, the matriarch of her family, and the steady support behind everything they built together. She also lovingly cared for her mother-in-law, Bessie Vap; her uncle and aunt, Frank and Mary Bartosovsky; and traveled frequently to San Francisco to help care for her older sisters.

Blanche was a devoted Catholic whose faith was the foundation of her life. She faithfully attended Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church until it closed and later became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was active in the Altar Society.

She had a wonderful sense of fun. Blanche loved a good joke and was full of life. Her fun-loving spirit brought joy to everyone around her, and family gatherings were always filled with laughter, stories, and treasured memories. Her greatest gift to her family was her example of living life to the fullest. She loved to travel and made several trips to visit family in El Salvador. She also visited Hawaii, Tennessee, Alaska, China, and Costa Rica, where she participated in a mission trip. Blanche also traveled throughout the U.S. with Daniel as they hauled Brangus bulls to various states.

Blanche was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Vap; her daughter, Sandra Vap; her parents; four brothers; and four sisters.

She is survived by her sons, Allan (Dianne), Gary, and Jeff (Linda), all of Atwood; her daughter, Rena Staats of Topeka; her grandchildren, Christina (Kodie) Cummings, Aaron Roche, Taylor (Audrey) Vap, Dylan (Amanda) Vap, Annie Vap, Daniel Vap, Derik Vap and his fiancée, Val, Tyson (Shelby) Vap, Dustin (Macy) Vap, Danielle McNeal, and Chanelle Staats; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Baalmann Mortuary in Atwood. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood, with burial in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery, rural Atwood.
