Edna Elizabeth Hawkins

Edna Elizabeth Hawkins, age 76, passed away March 5, 2026, at Wheat Haven Home in McDonald, KS.

She was born on April 17, 1949, in Leavenworth, KS to the late Frank L and Josephine Mary (Mages) Turner.

Edna’s parents owned and operated a dairy farm near Basehor, KS and she attended grade school at Wallula. After her parents purchased a farm in Lonestar, KS, she lived in a farmhouse there and went to local schools in that area, graduating from Lawrence High in 1967. After high school, she worked as a secretary for the KU economics department. During a Christmas party in 1969 she was reacquainted with a friend, Gordon Hawkins. They dated until April 17, 1970, when they became engaged on her 21st birthday. They were united in marriage on Sept. 5, 1970.

Edna became a homemaker while Gordon traveled for Ford Motor Co. They lived in various locations during that time. In 1979 they purchased the Hawkins family farm in Atwood, KS. This is where they raised their two children, Delbert Joseph and Sarah Elizabeth.

Edna loved being a farm wife, where she shared her passion of cooking, tending animals, keeping the finances, and driving tractor. She belonged to the Christian Mothers Altar Society of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she donated her time and helped prepare many meals for others. She was a lifelong member of the New Horizons Extension Club and also enjoyed the Luncheon Club.

She was always welcoming family and guests to the farm. She would take the kids to see her baby chicks and ducks in the spring, feed a bottle calf, and play games and cards. While entertaining, she always shared her home cooking with a big meal and then tried to beat any opponent at pitch or pinocle card games. She enjoyed vacations (especially trips with their lifelong friends Bob and Karol Ruda), watching and helping her kids and granddaughters in school activities and 4-H.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon; son, Del (Kristi); daughter, Sarah; granddaughters, Natalie (Shawn) Pochop, Daisy and Judy Hawkins and Madison Brown; two great-grandsons, Oakley Brown and Waylon Pochop. She is also survived by her brother Joe Turner, nephews LeRoy and Steve (Cheryl) Turner and other family and loved ones.

Edna will be dearly missed and remembered for the extraordinary and mischievous woman she was.
