Shirley Bourquin, 82, passed away peacefully on Easter morning, April 5, 2026, at Colby Health and Rehabilitation Center in Colby, Kansas.
Born June 19, 1943, to Lloyd and Lucille White, Shirley was raised on the family farm in Colby alongside her siblings. From an early age, she was known for her strong work ethic, creativity, and joyful spirit. She graduated from Colby High School and went on to earn both her Bachelor’s in Music Education and Master’s in Special Education from Kansas State University. While there, she sang in the A Cappella Choir and developed her lifelong love of music.
Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Dan Bourquin, on January 25, 1963. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and adventure. Shirley taught music and later special education, pouring her heart into her students and community. She was also a devoted partner to Dan in many ventures, always bringing creativity, determination, and a willingness to make things work.
A gifted seamstress, musician, and encourager, Shirley found joy in caring for others. Her home was filled with music, laughter, and love, and she will be remembered for her radiant smile and unwavering faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dan. She is survived by her siblings; her sons, Chad (Tami) Bourquin and Bret (Jennie) Bourquin; five grandchildren- Micah, Mikala, Bret, Olivia and Abraham; and a great-grandchild, Odessa.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held Monday, April 27, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Colby, Kansas. Memorials may be made to Colby Public Schools, to be used for special education, and mailed in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67701.
