Terry Lynn Overton, 54, of Colby, Kansas, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025. Terry was born in WaKeeney, Kansas, on October 28, 1970, to George and Inez Overton. Terry was the middle child of three. He attended Trego Community High School and graduated in 1989. He attended Fort Hays State University and proudly graduated with a degree in Chemistry in 1994. Through the encouragement of his Uncle Max Overton who was also a chemist, he was aspiring to work as a chemist with the federal government in Oregon. However, there was a freeze on hiring and that goal didn’t get accomplished. So, he took on any job he could to make ends meet because that’s what our family does. Terry spent time in Oregon until moving back to Colby, Kansas in 1999. He quickly started work at Deep Rock Cafe working with Inez and serving others. Terry’s son, Brennon Overton, was born in Oregon and Terry got full custody of him so he could move back in 2004. They gave Brennon the family setting with the Overton’s he needed. Terry then began his T L Flooring business creating masterpieces in tiled showers and pleasing customers. He was so proud of his work! Eventually he moved on to installing carpet, tile and again making customers home better. Along the way he gained so many relationships and would do several services even if it wasn’t on the ticket. Terry loved helping others and never wanted the notoriety. He felt comfort knowing others felt better. Because that was his way - to make others feel good. In 2017, Terry started the journey that clarified his belief that a power greater than him can restore to sanity. His sister, Sheila, learned everything she could about recovery to be able to relate and be there for each other. He found brotherhood, cleansed of his struggles and a path that led him to others that were always there for him with no judgment. That was so healing and strengthening to where he could look at life in a new light. In 2018, he met Ariel and they were engaged in 2019 and married on January 24, 2020. He connected right away with her and got to be himself with his humor. Terry shared with Ariel that his family was now hers. He welcomed Gage into his life and loved him as his own. Gage discovered Terry was a father figure for him. Terry and Ariel built their relationship on humor, love and commitment to recovery. On March 8, 2022, Terry and Ariel became the loving parents of Genevieve Taylor. Terry was a very proud father and cherished every moment with her. He cared for her, loved her, and Genevieve returned that with every time she giggled and smiled with her whole body every time she saw him. Terry loved being a family and they spent time working hard, catching time together even if it was little moments here and there to joining others in recovery for campouts, fishing, hunting and supporting each other. Genevieve would ask often “where’s my daddy” while waiting for him to come home from a flooring job. She could hear his truck coming and would jump in his arms and hug him with all her might. He truly felt love for her in every part of his body, heart and soul.
Terry was so proud of his son, Brennon, and lovingly welcomed Allyssa into the family when they married November 5, 2022. Terry was just as happy to be a grandpa to Eleonora born on May 22, 2024.
Terry was a loving and giving father, husband, brother, son, uncle, grandpa, cousin, Cubs fan, Denver Broncos fan and above all most proud of being Genevieve’s daddy.
Terry is survived by his wife, Ariel, of 5 1/2 years; his son Brennon, wife Alyssa and granddaughter Eleonora; stepson Gage and daughter Genevieve. He is also survived by his parents, George and Inez; sister, Sheila, and brother-in-law Mike niece Cassandra, nephew Josh; and sister Christie, nephews Jacob, Nick and niece Gracie. Terry was preceded in death by his older brother George and niece Lexi Garcia.
Our family would like to extend our gratitude to all that were a part of Terry’s life.
A memorial service will take place from 1-5:00 p.m. Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the Colby American Legion.
